`` Lights On At The End Of The Party Are Lads And Rapists

Within â€Å"â€Å"Lights on at the End of the Party†: Are Lads’ Mags Mainstreaming Dangerous Sexism?† article written by Miranda A.H. Horvath, Peter Hegarty, Suzannah Tyler, and Sophie Mansfield, the researchers explore the possible implications and similarities of â€Å"lads’ mags† and rapists. Within the first study, men are sampled to see how they identify with quotes from both sources and if the difference in source affects the result. In the second study, a group of men and women are asked to distinguish between quotes from the magazines and rapists, as well as rank them on how derogatory they were. The results from each study reveal shocking truths in society, and raises important questions. The main problem being, these magazines are normalizing hostile sexism. â€Å"Lads’ mags† can be found in the magazine racks and are similar to magazines such as GQ and Esquire, but aimed at a younger audience. They pander to young adult men by offering advice on women, and relationships, as well as feature â€Å"humorous† articles. However, the advice on women is crude and the pictures found in the pages of such magazines offer risquà © imagery on women. When the editors of such magazines are confronted about the attitude displayed towards women, they claim it’s all in good fun and â€Å"obviously† ironic. Unfortunately, these magazines are considered reputable learning sources for young adult men, but what they print isn’t far from what a particular un-reputable source says: rapists.
